Front Door Handlesets and Entry Door Hardware

Handlesets are coordinated door hardware assemblies used primarily on front doors and other exterior entry doors. Unlike a simple door handle or pull, an active handleset typically combines an exterior grip or pull with locking hardware and interior operating trim. The interior side may use a knob or lever depending on the handleset design and product family.

Handleset configurations vary according to the locking system and visible trim. Single cylinder and double cylinder handlesets use different cylinder arrangements, while mortise handlesets incorporate a mortise-style lock body. Electronic handlesets add electronic or keypad-controlled entry to the handleset format. One-piece, two-piece, full-plate, and interconnected designs describe additional ways the visible hardware and locking components are arranged across the door.

Interior trim is an important part of many handleset configurations. Some handlesets include the corresponding interior knob or lever trim as part of the set. Other product families provide the exterior handleset and offer compatible interior trim separately. These separate components are commonly described as handleset trim packs or interior trim packs and may provide multiple coordinating knob or lever choices within the same handleset family.

Dummy handlesets provide the appearance of a matching handleset without the operating lock and latch function of the active side. They are commonly used on the inactive leaf of paired front doors or double entry doors so both door leaves have coordinated exterior hardware. The active door carries the functioning entry hardware, while the dummy side provides matching non-operating trim.

Handlesets are closely associated with deadbolt-style locking hardware, exterior grips, interior knobs or levers, latches, strikes, cylinders, trim plates, and mounting components. The exact combination varies by handleset type and manufacturer. Related deadbolts provide another exterior-door locking format and may also be used with other types of entry door hardware.

Across traditional, transitional, contemporary, and modern designs, handlesets remain a distinct front-entry hardware format built around a coordinated exterior grip, locking function, and interior trim rather than simply a standalone door handle.
