Choosing an Entry Handleset

Entry handlesets combine a prominent exterior grip with locking hardware and coordinated interior trim. Depending on the design, the handleset may use a tubular latch and separate deadbolt, a mortise lock body, an interconnected mechanism, or an electronic locking component. Dummy handlesets provide matching non-latching trim for inactive doors or the inactive leaf of a pair.

Measure the door preparation before choosing a replacement. Check cross-bore and edge-bore dimensions, backset, door thickness, spacing between lock components, and the lower mounting location for the exterior grip. Handlesets with similar upper trim can use different grip lengths or lower through-bolt positions, so the complete dimensional drawing should be compared with existing holes.

Handing matters for some interior lever trims, mortise configurations, and product families. Determine the door swing and the handing convention required by the manufacturer. Also confirm what interior knob or lever is included or selected, because some handleset systems allow the exterior grip and interior trim to be configured separately.

Cylinder configuration affects emergency exit. A single-cylinder handleset generally uses a key outside and a thumbturn inside. A double-cylinder configuration requires a key on both sides, which can delay or prevent emergency egress if the key is unavailable. Double-cylinder hardware may be restricted or prohibited on some doors by building, fire, or life-safety rules, so verify the requirements for the specific opening before selecting it.

Once function and fit are established, compare trim profile, grip style, interior hardware, keying options, and finish. Review the exact product listing for included latches, bolts, strikes, cylinders, mounting hardware, and installation requirements. For electronic handlesets, also verify the specific keypad, battery, programming, and connectivity features offered by that model.
