One Sided Deadbolts and Interior Thumbturn Locks

One sided deadbolts provide deadbolt operation from one side of the door without an exterior keyed cylinder. The operating side commonly uses a thumbturn to extend or retract the deadbolt, while the opposite side does not provide keyed access. Depending on the lock design and door preparation, the exterior side may use a blank plate or have no exposed operating trim.

Residential one sided deadbolts are found on patio doors, secondary doors, and other openings where locking operation is located on the interior side. Commercial versions can also appear on doors that use one-sided locking, occupancy indicators, specialized trim, or other application-specific configurations.

One sided deadbolt construction varies by door preparation and lock family. Full-bore models use a standard-style door preparation with trim covering the bore, while half-bore and other configurations can use different preparations. Interior trim ranges from traditional round thumbturns to square, rectangular, contemporary, and commercial designs.

Some one sided deadbolts include exterior plates even though the exterior side has no keyed cylinder. Others are designed without visible exterior operating hardware. The specific arrangement depends on the deadbolt design, mounting configuration, and door preparation.

Backset, bolt construction, door thickness compatibility, trim dimensions, grade, mounting hardware, and indicator features also vary across one sided deadbolt families. Related hardware can include deadbolt latches, strikes, thumbturn assemblies, exterior plates, mounting hardware, and other components associated with the specific lock configuration.

One sided models are part of the broader deadbolts assortment. Other keyed configurations include single cylinder deadbolts, which use an exterior keyed cylinder and interior thumbturn, and double cylinder deadbolts, which use keyed cylinders on both sides of the door.
