Choosing an Electronic Deadbolt

Electronic deadbolts combine a deadbolt with code-based or electronic access for residential entry doors. Some use physical push buttons, others use touchscreens, and connected models may add app, wireless, or smart-home functions. Many models retain a keyed cylinder as a backup or alternate entry method, while others use key-free exterior trim. The exact operating methods vary by lock.

Mechanical fit is still the first selection step. Check the required cross-bore and edge-bore preparation, backset, door thickness range, bolt preparation, strike location, and trim dimensions. Replacement projects should be compared with the existing deadbolt holes and door edge so the new lock fits without unexpected modification.

Review the access features at the product level. Compare how user codes are created and deleted, the number of codes supported, temporary or scheduled access options where provided, keypad or touchscreen operation, auto-lock settings, lockout features, and whether a physical key override is included. Similar-looking electronic locks can have very different programming capabilities.

Smart connectivity is not universal. Depending on the model, features may include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, fingerprint access, remote control, or compatibility with a specific app, hub, bridge, or smart-home platform. Confirm any required network equipment, subscriptions, accounts, or compatible devices before choosing a lock based on connected features.

Battery type, battery access, low-battery warnings, and emergency access are also important for daily use. Follow the manufacturer's installation and programming instructions, confirm the lock is suitable for the door and environment, and keep any required backup key or emergency-power method available according to the product design.
