Commercial mortise locks are designed for doors prepared with a mortised pocket in the door edge, allowing the lock body to sit inside the door rather than mounting on the surface. The right mortise lock depends first on the function required at the opening. Mortise lock sizes must be checked against the existing door preparation. Compare the lock case height, depth and thickness, backset, faceplate dimensions and mounting locations with the manufacturer's drawing. Also verify door thickness, handing where applicable, cylinder placement and trim requirements. Backset is measured from the door edge to the operating centerline specified by the manufacturer; matching that measurement alone does not establish compatibility. Check the lever or knob trim, cylinder and strike when reusing components from an existing commercial door mortise lock.
