Choosing Oval Cabinet Knobs for Doors and Drawers

Oval cabinet knobs offer a different hand feel from round or square knobs because the elongated shape gives the fingers a longer gripping surface. They can be used on kitchen cabinet doors, vanity doors, drawers, built-ins, laundry cabinets, furniture, and other storage pieces. Designs range from simple smooth ovals to egg-shaped, ceramic, faceted, and more decorative profiles, making the shape suitable for traditional, transitional, and selected contemporary cabinet styles.

Overall dimensions matter even though most cabinet knobs use a single mounting screw. Compare the knob’s length, width, and projection from the cabinet face. A larger oval can be easier to grip on a frequently used drawer, while a smaller knob may be better scaled to narrow doors or compact furniture. The size and shape of the base or foot can also determine whether the knob covers marks left by the previous hardware.

Finish selection is easiest when the knob is viewed with nearby cabinet pulls, hinges, faucets, lighting, and appliance finishes. Nickel, chrome, black, bronze, brass-tone, ceramic, and other finishes can appear different between manufacturers, so matching by finish name alone does not always create an exact visual match. When a project uses both knobs and pulls, selecting pieces from the same collection or manufacturer finish family can simplify coordination.

Before installation, confirm the screw size and cabinet or drawer-front thickness. Included screws may be intended for common cabinet construction but can be too short or too long for unusually thick or thin fronts. For a new layout, use consistent placement from door to door and drawer to drawer. For replacement work, inspect the existing hole and cabinet surface so the new oval knob seats flat and covers the previous hardware footprint cleanly.
