Choosing Mortise Handlesets and Entry Trim

Mortise handlesets are designed around a mortise lock body recessed into the edge of the door. The exterior trim can include a pull grip, escutcheon, cylinder opening, and deadbolt or latch controls, while the interior side may use a lever, knob, turn piece, or coordinated escutcheon depending on the lock function and series.

The existing door preparation is critical. Confirm the mortise pocket dimensions, backset, cylinder location, trim spacing, door thickness, and handing requirements for the specific lock family. A decorative trim set may be designed for a particular mortise lock body and should not be assumed to work with another manufacturer or series.

Single-cylinder mortise entry configurations typically provide keyed access from the exterior with interior operation appropriate to the lock design. Double-cylinder versions use keyed operation on both sides and can restrict emergency egress if a key is required to unlock from the interior. Building and life-safety requirements may restrict where that configuration can be used, so verify the requirements for the opening before selecting it.

For replacement projects, identify the existing manufacturer and mortise lock series before selecting new trim. Matching the mechanical preparation first makes it easier to choose the desired grip style, lever or knob design, finish, and other decorative details without creating unnecessary door modifications.
