Choosing Keyless Entry Hardware

Keyless entry describes the access method, not one single lock format. The category can include keypad or touchscreen deadbolts, electronic knobs and levers, mechanical pushbutton locks, smart locks, and coordinated entry hardware. Start by deciding whether the opening needs a deadbolt, latch-operated lever or knob, handleset arrangement, or commercial lock configuration.

Mechanical compatibility remains essential even when the lock is electronic. Check cross-bore and edge-bore preparation, backset, door thickness, handing where required, latch or bolt preparation, strike alignment, trim dimensions, and any manufacturer-specific mounting requirements. A smart lock still has to fit and operate correctly as a mechanical lock.

Access features vary significantly. Some locks use stand-alone user codes, while others add Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, app control, remote access, schedules, audit features, or integration with other systems. Confirm the exact feature set, account or bridge requirements, and compatible platform for the individual model instead of assuming all keyless locks offer the same connectivity.

Battery type, battery access, low-battery warnings, emergency entry, and mechanical key override are also useful comparison points. For commercial mechanical pushbutton locks, battery requirements may not apply at all. Review how the lock behaves during a power or battery issue and how authorized users can regain access.

For exterior, commercial, fire-rated, or egress-related openings, verify the lock's listed application and the requirements of the complete door assembly. Electronic or connected features do not replace the need for correct latching, free egress where required, proper strike alignment, and suitable door preparation.
