Choosing Commercial Door Hinges

Commercial door hinges support the door at the frame and influence swing, alignment and long-term operation. This collection includes full-mortise hinges in plain-bearing and ball-bearing formats along with spring hinges, architectural hinges and specialty designs used on commercial and institutional openings.

Hinge size is the first compatibility check. Measure the hinge height and width with the hinge open, then confirm leaf thickness, corner configuration and screw-hole pattern. Square-corner, 1/4-inch radius and 5/8-inch radius hinges are not interchangeable without changing the door or frame preparation. Common-looking hinges can also use different thicknesses or screw layouts.

Bearing type should match the door and application. Plain-bearing hinges are common on many standard openings, while ball-bearing hinges are used where reduced friction or heavier-duty operation is required. Spring hinges add a closing function and need to be selected and adjusted according to the door, frame and manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume one hinge type is suitable for every opening solely because the dimensions match.

Pin and security features can matter on exterior or controlled openings. Some hinges use removable pins, non-removable pins or other security-related configurations. Door weight, width, frequency of use and any fire-rating or listing requirements can also affect the number and type of hinges required. Verify those requirements for the complete opening before installation.

For replacement projects, record the existing hinge dimensions, corner shape, bearing style, pin type, finish and screw pattern before removal. For new work, coordinate the hinge specification with the door and frame preparation. Finish can then be selected to coordinate with the lockset, closer and other visible door hardware after the mechanical requirements are confirmed.
