Start with physical fit. Measure hinge height and width, identify whether the corners are square or radiused, and compare the screw-hole pattern and leaf thickness. Ball-bearing door hinges are commonly used on heavier or higher-use doors because the bearings support smoother movement under repeated operation. Plain-bearing hinges serve many standard residential and light-duty openings. Spring hinges add self-closing action, while pivot hinges and other specialty designs use different mounting geometry and should be matched carefully to the door and frame.

Commercial door hinges may also require specific material, bearing, pin, fire-door, accessibility, or duty characteristics. Non-removable pins, stainless-steel construction, listed hardware, and other features are model-specific, so check the exact product specifications when the opening has code or performance requirements.

After function and fit are established, choose a finish that coordinates with locks, closers, stops, and other visible hardware. Correct dimensions, construction, and door preparation should take priority over finish when replacing existing hinges.
