Choosing a Door Viewer or Peephole

Door viewers are compact optical devices installed through the door to provide a view of the area outside without opening the door. The assortment includes viewers with different viewing angles, body diameters, door-thickness ranges, finishes, privacy covers, and selected listed configurations for residential, multifamily, hospitality, and commercial applications.

Door thickness is one of the first measurements to check. Viewer barrels are designed to telescope or assemble across a specified thickness range, and a model that is too short or too long may not install correctly. Measure the door itself and compare the stated range for the exact viewer before ordering.

The required bore diameter is equally important for replacement work. Existing peepholes can use different hole sizes even when the visible trim appears similar. Measure the current bore or confirm the original viewer specification before enlarging or modifying the door. New installations should follow the manufacturer's drilling dimensions and placement instructions.

Viewing angle describes how much of the exterior area is visible through the lens. Wider-angle models can show more of the approach area, while other designs may prioritize different optical or dimensional characteristics. Privacy covers can block the inside lens when desired. Confirm any UL listing or fire-door suitability from the exact product if the opening requires it.

Finish can be coordinated with the lockset and other entry hardware after the technical fit is established. For rated, multifamily, hospitality, or other regulated doors, installation of a viewer can affect the complete opening, so verify the applicable requirements before drilling or replacing hardware.
