Choosing Bathtub, Shower and Roman Tub Faucets

Bathtub and shower faucet hardware can describe several different installation types. A tub-and-shower set typically combines a wall-mounted control valve or trim, tub spout, and showerhead for a shared bathing area. A Roman tub faucet is normally deck-mounted on the tub or surrounding surface and uses a different valve and hole layout. Identify the installation type before comparing style or finish because the underlying plumbing requirements are not interchangeable.

For a wall-mounted tub-and-shower installation, confirm the valve or rough-in required by the trim, the number and style of handles, the location of the tub spout and showerhead, and the existing wall preparation. On a replacement project, decorative trim generally needs to match the installed valve family. A new trim set that looks similar to the old one may not connect to a different manufacturer's or product family's rough-in valve.

Roman tub faucets require attention to the deck or tub-rim hole pattern. Compare the number of mounting holes, handle spacing, spout reach and height, deck thickness, and any separate valve components or flexible connections required below the mounting surface. The spout should reach comfortably into the tub while leaving enough clearance for operation and cleaning around the handles and trim.

Always review what is included with the specific faucet. Some products include the necessary valve or internal components, while others are trim-oriented or require a compatible rough-in purchased separately. Check the product specifications for valve requirements, connection sizes, flow characteristics, shower components, tub spout, drain-related items if applicable, and any model-specific installation notes before ordering.

Once the plumbing and mounting requirements are confirmed, finish and design can be coordinated with bathroom faucets, towel hardware, shower accessories, and other visible fixtures. For replacement work, mechanical compatibility should come before appearance. For new projects, planning the valve, mounting layout, tub or shower configuration, and trim together helps avoid choosing a faucet that cannot be installed with the intended rough-in or fixture arrangement.
