Interconnected Handlesets

Interconnected handlesets and locksets combine latch and deadbolt functions so related locking hardware operates as one coordinated entry system. The active assortment includes residential and commercial interconnected lever configurations, passage and keyed-entry functions, and single-cylinder deadbolt combinations for entry and multifamily openings.

Compare lock function, door preparation, backset, door thickness, handing, cylinder and keyway, trim style, deadbolt configuration, and the way the latch and deadbolt interact. Interconnected hardware is more preparation-specific than a standard independent lever and deadbolt, so product dimensions and templates should be checked carefully.

Choosing an Interconnected Handleset or Lockset

Interconnected locks link the operation of the latch and deadbolt within one coordinated hardware system. Depending on the design and function, operating the interior lever or knob can retract both locking points for convenient egress, while exterior access may be controlled by a key, deadbolt, or other lock function. The exact operation varies by product family, so the function description should be reviewed before ordering.

Door preparation is a critical fit requirement. Interconnected hardware may use two bores, specific center-to-center spacing, manufacturer-specific chassis dimensions, and defined latch and deadbolt backsets. Measure the existing preparation or follow the template for a new installation rather than assuming a standard lever-and-deadbolt layout will accept every interconnected lock.

Residential and commercial interconnected systems can differ in grade, cylinder format, keyway, trim construction, handing, and available lock functions. Confirm the intended application, door thickness, handing where required, cylinder preparation, and whether the set is supplied with all interior and exterior trim needed for the opening.

For replacement work, identify the existing manufacturer and series before selecting a new interconnected lock. Matching the chassis, trim footprint, bore spacing, latch and deadbolt locations, and strike preparation can reduce the amount of door modification required.

Interconnected locks are often used on entry, multifamily, office, and other controlled openings. If the door is fire-rated, part of an egress route, or subject to accessibility or life-safety requirements, verify that the exact lock function, listing, trim, and operation are appropriate for the complete opening.
