Single cylinder deadbolts combine keyed exterior access with thumbturn operation on the interior side of the door. This configuration is commonly found on front doors, side entrances, garage entry doors, service doors, residential exterior doors, and selected commercial openings.

The exterior side contains the keyed cylinder used to extend or retract the deadbolt, while the interior side uses a thumbturn rather than a second keyed cylinder. This operating arrangement distinguishes single cylinder deadbolts from double cylinder deadbolts, which use keyed cylinders on both sides of the door.
