Choosing a Kwikset Deadbolt

Deadbolt function is the first decision. A single-cylinder deadbolt uses a keyed cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. A double-cylinder deadbolt requires a key on both sides. One-sided models operate only from the interior, while electronic deadbolts can add keypad, touchscreen, fingerprint, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or other access methods depending on the model.

Check the physical door preparation before replacing a lock. Backset, door thickness, cross-bore and edge-bore dimensions, bolt faceplate or drive-in preparation, strike, trim size, and any existing holes must suit the selected deadbolt. Combo packs may also include a knob or lever that requires a separate latch preparation.

SmartKey Security is available on selected Kwikset deadbolts and provides a re-keyable cylinder system. Not every Kwikset deadbolt uses SmartKey, so confirm the exact cylinder technology, keyway, and keying requirements for the product being considered.

Double-cylinder deadbolts require special attention because a key is needed for interior operation. This can restrict emergency egress if a key is not immediately available, and building or fire requirements may limit their use on certain doors. Verify the requirements for the opening before installation.

For electronic models, also review battery requirements, key override, user-code management, connectivity, and emergency access. Finish and trim style should be selected after lock function and fit are confirmed.
