Choosing Door Kick Plates

Door kick plates are protective sheets mounted on the lower portion of a door to reduce wear from shoes, carts, cleaning equipment, and routine traffic. They are common on commercial, institutional, hospitality, service, and residential doors where the lower face receives repeated contact. The assortment includes several metals, sizes, finishes, and mounting configurations.

Measure the actual door width before choosing a plate. Kick plates are typically narrower than the full door so they clear the door edges and hardware, but the correct allowance depends on the product and opening. Also compare plate height, thickness where provided, corner shape, screw-hole pattern, and any edge or bevel details.

Door construction and nearby hardware affect installation. Check clearance from thresholds, sweeps, weatherstripping, louvers, vision panels, locks, pulls, or other mounted components. Hollow metal, wood, fiberglass, and other door materials can require different fastening considerations, so use the mounting hardware and installation method appropriate for both the plate and door.

Material influences appearance and service conditions. Stainless steel, brass, aluminum, and plated or finished metals can differ in durability, maintenance, and how they coordinate with other hardware. For high-use openings, prioritize the plate dimensions and material appropriate to the environment before choosing the decorative finish.

If replacing an existing kick plate, measure its exact dimensions and mounting-hole locations before removal. Reusing the same footprint can help cover previous marks and reduce drilling. For rated or specialized doors, confirm that field installation of the plate is permitted for the complete assembly.
