Surface Mounted Door Closers

Shop surface mounted door closers for offices, commercial entrances, service doors and other openings that need controlled closing with an exposed closer body and arm. Compare standard and heavy duty surface closers by door size, frequency of use, mounting configuration and available adjustments. For a metal or steel door, confirm that the selected model, fasteners and door reinforcement suit the installation.

Choose a surface mount door closer that matches the required regular-arm, top-jamb or parallel-arm arrangement, where supported by the model. Our door closer selection guide explains the main considerations. Browse all door closers to compare other formats.

For an existing hydraulic closer that needs tuning, use our door closer adjustment guide to identify sweep, latch-speed and backcheck controls before making changes.

Choosing a Surface Mount Door Closer for Your Opening

A surface door closer mounts visibly to the door and frame rather than inside a concealed pocket. The closer body, arm and mounting hardware must work together for the intended installation. Start with the door's width, weight, swing and expected use, then check the manufacturer's application limits. For busy commercial openings, compare heavy duty options and Grade 1 door closers without assuming that grade alone establishes the correct model or size. Door conditions and the selected mounting arrangement still matter.

Regular-arm, top-jamb and parallel-arm configurations use different body and arm positions. Check which arrangements the product supports and whether the required bracket or mounting plate is included. Measure available space on the door and frame, including clearances around nearby trim and hardware. A closer supplied for one arrangement should not be assumed to include everything needed for another. If you are replacing an existing surface mounted door closer, record its model number, hole pattern, arm type and mounting position before ordering.

For metal door closer applications, confirm the fastening and reinforcement requirements for the actual door and frame. Steel doors can differ in construction, weight and preparation, so the door material alone does not determine which closer to use. Follow the manufacturer's mounting template and specified fastening method. On an exterior opening, also review exposure and door-size guidance for the exact configuration. Compare dimensions and installation requirements rather than choosing a replacement solely because the cover shape or finish resembles the old closer.

Adjustable surface closers may offer spring-power, closing-speed, latch-speed, backcheck or delayed-action controls, depending on the model. Confirm the functions supplied and use the manufacturer's instructions for setup. Hold-open and stop features also depend on the selected arm and configuration; they are not included on every closer. Where the project has fire-door, accessibility or other requirements, verify the complete opening and selected hardware. Our door closer selection guide provides a starting point for comparing the available options.

Check whether you need a complete surface closer assembly or a replacement component. Arms, covers, bodies and mounting plates must match the original series and installation. Browse door closer parts and accessories for repair components, and review each listing's included items before comparing prices. If the opening is prepared for a hidden unit, compare concealed door closers instead. Return to all door closers when the project includes several mounting types or openings with different requirements.
