Security Door Bolts, Flush Bolts, Slide Bolts, and Inactive-Door Hardware

Security door bolts provide an additional mechanical way to secure a door or hold an inactive door leaf in position. They are commonly used on double doors, French doors, commercial service openings, storage rooms, utility spaces, and other applications where a top, bottom, surface, or concealed bolt supplements the primary lock or latch.

Flush bolts are recessed into the edge or face of the door and are frequently used on the inactive leaf of paired doors. Surface bolts mount visibly to the face of the door, while slide bolts and extension bolts use different operating formats depending on the opening. Dutch door bolts can secure the upper and lower door sections together or control one section independently, depending on the hardware design.

When choosing a door bolt, compare the mounting location, bolt throw or travel, faceplate dimensions, strike position, rod length where used, fastener pattern, handing or orientation if applicable, and door/frame preparation. Top and bottom bolts on double doors must align correctly with the header, floor, threshold, or strike hardware.

Security bolts are auxiliary hardware and do not all provide the same level of forced-entry resistance or code compliance. For fire-rated, egress, or commercial openings, confirm the exact hardware requirements for the complete door assembly before installation.
