Choosing Magnetic Catches for Doors and Cabinets

Magnetic catches provide a simple way to hold a door or panel closed by bringing a magnet and strike into alignment. They are commonly used where a keyed lock or spring latch is unnecessary, including cabinet doors, closet doors, access panels, and selected light-duty interior door applications. The correct catch depends on the size and movement of the door as well as the available mounting space.

Catch designs vary in magnet quantity, housing size, strike shape, mounting orientation, and adjustment. Single, double, and multi-pole configurations can provide different holding characteristics, while adjustable catches can help fine-tune alignment after installation. Review the manufacturer’s dimensions and intended use rather than choosing a catch only by its visible size or finish.

The magnet and strike need to meet squarely when the door closes. Misalignment, excessive gaps, loose hinges, or a warped door can reduce holding performance. Before replacing an existing catch, compare the mounting-hole pattern, overall body dimensions, projection, strike location, and clearance inside the cabinet, frame, or door opening.

Magnetic catches are holding devices rather than security locks. For openings that require positive latching, keyed security, fire-door latching, or another specific door-control function, select hardware designed for that requirement. Use the product specifications to confirm that the catch is appropriate for the door, cabinet, or panel application.
