Choosing Ives Flush Bolts and Surface Bolts

Flush bolts are recessed into the door edge or face so much of the mechanism sits within the door, while surface bolts mount visibly to the door surface. Both can secure an inactive leaf or auxiliary opening, but they require different preparations and should not be treated as interchangeable.

For flush bolts, compare door material, body dimensions, faceplate size, rod length, bolt throw, top or bottom location, strike, and any automatic or manual operating function. Wood and hollow-metal doors can use different bolt bodies and preparations.

Surface bolts are available in different lengths, widths, throws, and mounting patterns. They can be used on inactive doors, Dutch doors, or other applications where a visible surface-mounted bolt is appropriate. Check the keeper or strike and the amount of clearance required for the bolt to operate freely.

Paired fire doors and other regulated openings can require specific latching, sequencing, coordinators, strikes, and listed components. Confirm the Ives model and complete door-assembly requirements before replacing a bolt on a rated or egress-related opening.

For replacement work, identify the existing model or measure the body, faceplate, rod, strike, and mounting pattern carefully. Finish should be selected after the mechanical and listing requirements are established.
