Choosing an Ives Door Catch

Door catches hold a door closed without the operating latch found in a conventional knob or lever lockset. Ball catches use a spring-loaded ball, roller catches use a roller mechanism, and magnetic catches use magnetic attraction. Each type has a different preparation and feel, so the replacement should match the existing installation whenever possible.

Ball and roller catches often require a mortise or bored opening in the door edge or top. Compare body length and width, faceplate dimensions, corner shape, screw spacing, adjustment range, and strike size. Magnetic catches may mount to the face of a door or cabinet and require proper alignment between the magnet and strike plate.

Adjustment is important for smooth operation. A ball or roller that projects too far can make the door difficult to close, while too little engagement can allow it to drift open. Align the catch and strike carefully and use the manufacturer's adjustment method to achieve reliable holding without excessive resistance.

Some Ives catch products are intended for cabinet doors or specialty applications rather than full-size passage doors. Check the product's intended use, dimensions, and mounting method before selecting it for a particular opening.

Finish can be coordinated with hinges, dummy trim, pulls, and other visible hardware after mechanical compatibility is confirmed. For replacement work, the existing catch model and strike dimensions are the best starting point.
