Choosing an Ives Baseboard Door Stop

Baseboard stops are a straightforward way to control door travel when there is a suitable baseboard or trim surface behind the door. Rigid stops use a fixed projection, while flexible stops can bend when bumped and are useful where a more forgiving design is preferred. Both styles should be positioned so the bumper meets the door at an appropriate contact point.

Projection is one of the most important measurements. A stop that is too short may allow the knob or lever to reach the wall, while an unnecessarily long stop can project farther into the room than needed. Measure the distance between the mounting surface and the desired stopping point before selecting the length.

Mounting-base size and fastener requirements should match the baseboard or trim construction. Solid wood provides a different mounting condition from thin molding or hollow trim, so make sure the mounting surface can hold the stop securely. Follow the product instructions for screws and installation.

Replacement bumper tips and related parts can restore an existing stop when the body is still serviceable. Match the Ives stop or part series and dimensions rather than assuming all rubber tips are interchangeable.

After projection and mounting are confirmed, choose the material and finish that coordinate with nearby hinges, knobs, levers, and other architectural hardware.
