Framed Medicine Cabinets

Framed medicine cabinets combine mirrored bathroom storage with a visible frame around the door or mirror. They are used above vanities and sinks in primary baths, guest bathrooms, and powder rooms, with styles that include metal, wood-look, and decorative framed designs.

Before ordering, compare the cabinet's overall width and height, wall depth, mounting method, door swing, mirror size, interior storage, and rough-opening requirements when recessed installation is planned. Surface-mounted models should also be checked for projection from the wall and available clearance around nearby fixtures.

Choosing a Framed Medicine Cabinet

A framed medicine cabinet adds enclosed bathroom storage while giving the mirror a finished border that can coordinate with the vanity, lighting, faucets, and other visible hardware. The frame can make the cabinet read more like a decorative mirror, while the cabinet behind it provides shelves for medicine, grooming items, and everyday bathroom supplies. Start by measuring the available wall area above the sink or vanity and checking the relationship to lights, backsplashes, outlets, trim, and nearby walls.

Mounting method is one of the most important selection points. Recessed medicine cabinets fit partly or fully into a wall opening and therefore require a compatible rough opening, wall depth, and stud arrangement. Surface-mounted cabinets attach to the face of the wall and project farther into the room, but they can be useful where the wall cannot be opened or does not provide enough cavity depth. Some models may support more than one mounting method; verify the individual product specifications before planning the installation.

Compare both the overall cabinet dimensions and the dimensions of the mirror or framed door. A cabinet that fits the wall may still interfere with vanity lighting, side walls, towel hardware, or an adjacent door when opened. Door swing and hinge location should be considered early, particularly on narrow walls or near corners. Sliding-door models have different clearance needs and should be evaluated by their opening width and access to the interior shelves.

Interior storage varies by cabinet. Review the number of shelves, whether shelf positions are adjustable, usable interior depth, cabinet material, and any special interior features listed for the model. Larger cabinets can offer more storage, but the wall structure and available space should determine the practical size. For replacements, compare the existing rough opening and mounting holes before assuming a new cabinet of similar overall size will fit without wall work.

Frame material, color, and profile can be considered after the physical fit is confirmed. A simple metal or narrow frame can create a cleaner appearance, while wood-look or more pronounced frames can add a stronger decorative element. Check the product-specific installation instructions, mounting hardware, wall requirements, and included components before installation, especially for heavier cabinets or recessed models.
