Commercial Electric Door Strikes for Access Control

Electric door strikes provide an electrically controlled release point at the frame so a compatible latch or lock can be released by an access-control system. Commercial applications can involve cylindrical locks, mortise locks, rim exit devices and other latch configurations, and the strike must be matched to the hardware actually installed on the door.

Frame preparation is one of the first compatibility checks. Compare faceplate size, keeper depth, latchbolt position, frame material, single- or double-door configuration and the available space in the frame. Different electric strike models can require substantially different cutouts even when they serve similar lock types. Replacement projects should identify the existing strike and frame preparation before a substitute is selected.

Electrical requirements also vary. Verify voltage, current draw, AC or DC requirements, wiring method and any monitoring or signaling options. Fail-safe and fail-secure describe different behavior when power is removed, and the correct choice depends on the opening and project requirements. Do not select the operating mode solely from the product name without considering the complete access-control and egress design.

Exit-device and mortise-lock applications deserve special attention because the latch geometry and release relationship can be series-specific. Some products are designed for rim exit devices, others for mortise or cylindrical locks, and certain strikes are intended for single versus paired doors. Manufacturer compatibility information should guide the match.

For fire-rated, life-safety or other regulated openings, confirm the strike's listing and permitted application as part of the complete door assembly. Installation and wiring should follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable project requirements. Final selection should account for the lock, frame, electrical system, access-control behavior and egress function together.
