Choosing BEST Access Locks, Cores and Keying Hardware

BEST Access hardware is frequently used in commercial and institutional keying systems built around interchangeable cores, cylinders, locksets, padlocks, and controlled keyways. The first step is identifying the existing key system and hardware family. Keyway, core format, pinning system, cylinder housing, lock function, and facility keying requirements determine whether a component will integrate with the installed system.

Interchangeable-core systems allow the core to be removed from compatible hardware with the appropriate control key, but cores and housings must share the correct format. When selecting rim cylinder housings, lock cylinders, or core-related components, verify the pin length, housing type, keyway requirements, and the lock or device that will receive the cylinder.

BEST key blanks are keyway-specific. A blank that is the correct length but uses a different keyway is not a substitute. Existing facility systems may also have master-keying or restricted-keyway requirements that should be identified before additional keys, cores, or cylinders are ordered. Preserve the existing system information when adding new openings or replacing hardware.

Padlocks and other BEST Access hardware can also be integrated into a broader keying program when the product and core format support it. For padlocks, confirm shackle diameter and length, key-retaining function, core configuration, and the environmental or security needs of the application. Matching these details helps maintain consistent key control across doors and portable locking hardware.

For commercial facilities, changes to cylinders or cores can affect many users and openings. Verify the existing BEST system before ordering replacement components, especially when master keying or interchangeable cores are involved. Product specifications should be used to confirm compatibility, and keying decisions should be coordinated across the facility rather than made one opening at a time.
