Choosing Ball Catches for Interior Doors

Ball catches hold a door closed through spring or tension pressure rather than a conventional latch bolt. They are commonly used on closet doors, pairs of interior doors, pantry doors, and other openings where the door needs to stay closed without a turning latch. The ball engages a strike in the frame or opposing door and releases when the door is pulled open. The correct style depends primarily on the existing door and frame preparation.

Drive-in ball catches fit into a bored hole in the top or edge of the door and are useful where a compact installation is desired. Mortised or barrel-style catches use a faceplate or rectangular preparation. Adjustable tension catches allow the engagement pressure or ball projection to be tuned so the door stays closed without requiring excessive force to open. Match the catch type to the preparation already present whenever replacing existing hardware.

Dimensions matter because ball catches vary in body diameter, body length, faceplate size, strike dimensions, and screw-hole spacing. Measure the existing catch body and strike before ordering. If the door already has a bored hole or mortise, a close dimensional match can reduce the need to patch, enlarge, or relocate the preparation. The strike must also align with the ball when the door is fully closed.

Adjustment should provide enough holding force to keep the door closed while still allowing comfortable opening. Too little projection can let the door drift open, while too much tension or projection can make the door difficult to pull open and increase wear. Door alignment matters as well; sagging hinges or an out-of-square frame can prevent the ball from lining up with the strike even when the catch itself is correctly sized.

Finish is usually selected to coordinate with hinges, knobs, levers, flush bolts, or other visible hardware on the opening. For double doors, ball catches are often paired with dummy trim or other non-latching hardware, but the exact arrangement depends on the door design. Confirm the door thickness, catch location, strike placement, and existing preparation before choosing a replacement ball catch or related strike.
