Passage Door Knobs

Passage door knobs are non-locking knobsets that operate a latch without a keyed or privacy locking function. They are commonly used on hallways, closets, pantry doors, laundry rooms, utility spaces, and other openings where the door needs to latch but does not need to lock. Passage door knob sets come in traditional and contemporary styles with different knob profiles, rosettes, and finishes.

Choose the passage set that matches your door thickness, backset, latch preparation, and mounting dimensions. For rooms that need temporary privacy, compare privacy door knobs; for fixed, pull-only trim, choose suitable dummy door knobs. Browse all interior door knobs to coordinate functions across adjoining rooms.

Passage Door Knobs for Hallways, Closets, and Non-Locking Doors

What is a passage door knob? It combines an operating knob with a latch but has no keyed or privacy locking function. Most passage knobsets operate from both sides: turning a knob retracts the latch so the door can open. Sometimes described as a pass-through door knob, this hardware allows normal latch operation without a lock button or keyed cylinder. Passage describes how the hardware works, rather than a particular decorative style or room. Check the individual set's specifications and included components before ordering.

Hallway door knobs and closet knobs often use the passage function because the opening needs to stay latched without restricting access. Pantries, laundry rooms, and utility spaces can also use interior passage door knobs where locking is not required. A closet door that uses a separate catch may instead need dummy door knobs, which provide a fixed grip without operating a latch. Bedrooms and bathrooms that need temporary privacy commonly use privacy door knobs. Our door hardware function guide explains these differences.

For replacement passage sets, compare door thickness, backset, cross-bore and edge-bore dimensions, latch faceplate or drive-in preparation, and strike dimensions with the manufacturer's specifications. Check the rosette diameter if the old hardware leaves an outline or exposed area on the door. Passage set door hardware may be sold as a complete knobset, trim, or individual replacement components, so confirm exactly what the listing supplies. Older doors and mortise preparations can require different hardware from standard tubular sets. A replacement latch must match the specific lock family.

Compare knob profiles and trim to coordinate adjoining rooms. Round, ball, egg, and decorative shapes can create different looks even when the passage function is the same. For brass passage door knobs, review the finish options on the selected product, including polished brass where offered. Finish names do not establish the underlying construction material, and colors can vary between manufacturers. Check finish codes when coordinating pieces and review care instructions. Knob size, projection, and rosette shape also affect appearance and clearance.

Passage function is available in both knobs and passage door levers, allowing you to compare grips while keeping a non-locking latch function. A passage knob may also be used on an exterior opening when a separate deadbolt provides locking and the model is suitable for the installation conditions. Confirm fit, trim clearance, and intended use for that arrangement. For a whole-home project, count doors by function before ordering and use our interior door knobs collection to compare matching options for halls, closets, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
