Passage Door Knobs

Passage door knobs are non-locking knobsets that operate a latch without a keyed or privacy locking function. They are commonly used on hallways, closets, pantry doors, laundry rooms, children’s rooms, utility spaces, and other openings where the door needs to latch but does not need to lock. Passage function also appears on exterior doors where a separate deadbolt provides the locking function. Passage door knobs vary by knob profile, rosette shape, latch and backset, door thickness compatibility, mounting arrangement, and finish family. Styles include round, ball, egg, tulip, mushroom, square, traditional, transitional, and contemporary knob designs.

Passage Door Knobs for Hallways, Closets, and Non-Locking Doors

Passage door knobs combine an operating knob with a latch but do not include a keyed or privacy locking function. They are commonly used on hallways, closets, pantry doors, laundry rooms, children’s rooms, utility spaces, and other doors where normal latch operation is needed without a lock.

Passage describes the operating function of the hardware rather than a specific room or door location. The keyed vs. privacy vs. passage door hardware guide explains the functional differences between these common door hardware configurations.

Most passage door knobs have freely operating knobs on both sides of the door. Turning either knob retracts the latch so the door can open, and the latch returns when the knob is released. Because there is no privacy button, thumbturn, or keyed cylinder in the passage function, the knob itself does not provide locking operation.

Hallways and closets are common passage applications, along with pantries, laundry rooms, utility rooms, children’s rooms, and other spaces where a door needs to remain latched when closed. Passage hardware is also found on some exterior doors when locking is handled separately by a deadbolt.

Passage function is available with both knobs and passage door levers. Both use the same basic non-locking latch function, while the primary difference is the operating shape and trim design of the hardware.

Passage knobsets vary by latch configuration, backset, door thickness compatibility, knob profile, rosette shape, trim dimensions, and mounting arrangement. Individual hardware families can use fixed or adjustable latches and round, square, rectangular, decorative, or concealed-fastener trim.

Knob profiles include traditional ball and round shapes as well as egg, tulip, mushroom, square, crystal, and contemporary forms. Passage function appears across residential, decorative, utility-oriented, and selected commercial door hardware families.

Related components can include latches, strikes, rosettes, mounting hardware, trim pieces, and other components designed for the individual knob family. Construction, dimensions, grades, and operating details vary by manufacturer and lock series.
