Outdoor wall sconces provide lighting directly from the exterior wall and are commonly installed beside entry doors, garage doors, patios, porches, balconies, and service entrances. The category includes traditional lantern shapes as well as modern cylinders, rectangular fixtures, up-and-down lights, wall washers, and low-profile architectural designs. The best choice depends on both the area being illuminated and the amount of wall space available for the fixture.

Scale is especially noticeable around doors and garages. Review the fixture’s overall height and width, how far it projects from the wall, and the dimensions of the backplate. Make sure the body and glass clear nearby door trim, shutters, gutters, address numbers, and other exterior details. When replacing an existing light, compare the new backplate with the current junction-box location and any marks or openings left by the old fixture.

Light output and direction vary across wall-sconce designs. Some fixtures direct light primarily downward, some illuminate both up and down, and lantern-style fixtures can distribute light through several glass panels. Check the lamp base or integrated LED specifications, wattage, color temperature, dimming information, and any photocell or control features on the exact product. Decorative appearance alone does not indicate how much usable light the fixture will provide.

Exterior exposure determines which rating is appropriate. A covered porch wall may experience different moisture conditions than an uncovered garage, side wall, or coastal-facing exterior. Verify the manufacturer’s damp- or wet-location listing for the actual placement and follow the specified mounting and electrical instructions. Coordinating finish with door hardware, house numbers, and nearby exterior fixtures can help create a consistent entry while still keeping fit and environmental suitability as the first priorities.
