Choosing Outdoor Post Lights and Post Lanterns

Outdoor post lights place illumination away from a building wall, making them useful along driveways, walkways, garden areas, entrances, patios, and larger exterior spaces. Designs range from traditional lantern-style fixtures to simpler architectural post tops and multi-head arrangements. Decide first where the light will be positioned and how much area it needs to serve, then choose a fixture scale that is appropriate for the post height and surrounding property.

Mounting compatibility is one of the most important details. Many post-top fixtures are designed for a specific post fitter size, while pier-mounted installations use an adapter or base that attaches to a masonry column, wall, or other flat surface. A fixture, post, and pier mount that look compatible are not necessarily designed to connect together. Check the fitter diameter, mounting method, hardware requirements, and manufacturer compatibility before combining separate components.

Fixture dimensions also affect the finished appearance and clearance. Review overall width, height, glass or shade dimensions, number of lights, and the relationship between the lantern and the supporting post. For multi-head post lights, consider the total spread as well as the height. Lamp type, integrated LED specifications, voltage, wattage, and control options should be checked on the exact model, especially when matching an existing outdoor lighting system.

Because post lights are commonly installed in exposed locations, verify the environmental rating and construction required for the site. Follow the manufacturer’s electrical and mounting instructions and use compatible outdoor-rated posts, bases, wiring methods, and accessories. For replacement projects, measuring the existing post diameter and mounting connection before ordering is usually more reliable than selecting a new lantern by style alone.
