This broad collection includes wall-mounted lights, ceiling fixtures, post lights, step lights, spot and flood lights, landscape fixtures, and other outdoor lighting for residential and commercial properties.

Choosing Outdoor Lighting for Exterior Spaces

Outdoor lighting serves several different jobs around a property, from illuminating an entry door to adding visibility along walkways, steps, patios, garages, and landscape areas. Start by identifying where the fixture will be installed and what it needs to illuminate. Wall lights and sconces are common beside doors and garages, ceiling fixtures work beneath covered areas, post lights illuminate freestanding locations, and step or landscape lights provide lower-level illumination along paths and architectural features.

Fixture size and placement should be considered together. An exterior wall light needs enough scale for the door, garage, or wall where it is mounted without interfering with trim, shutters, doors, or nearby architectural details. Post lights must coordinate with the post or pier mounting arrangement, while ceiling fixtures need adequate overhead clearance. Review overall dimensions, projection, mounting plate or canopy dimensions, and installation height before selecting a fixture by appearance alone.

Outdoor fixtures can use replaceable lamps or integrated LED light sources, and electrical specifications vary by product. Compare voltage, wattage, lamp base, color temperature, dimming capability, and control compatibility where those features matter. Some fixtures may also support photocells, motion controls, or other operating features, but these should be confirmed on the individual product rather than assumed across the category.

Exposure is especially important for exterior lighting. A fixture under a covered porch can face different conditions than one mounted on an exposed wall, post, or landscape area. Check the manufacturer’s damp- or wet-location rating for the exact installation and follow the specified mounting and electrical instructions. For replacement projects, comparing the existing junction-box location, mounting footprint, fixture dimensions, and finish can make it easier to choose outdoor lighting that fits the opening and coordinates with surrounding hardware.
