Choosing Mushroom Cabinet Knobs
Mushroom knobs are named for their rounded cap-like profile. The shape is comfortable to grasp and versatile enough for traditional, transitional, casual, and simple contemporary cabinetry. They can be used on kitchen cabinet doors, bathroom vanities, dresser drawers, built-ins, laundry cabinets, and other furniture-style storage.
Diameter and projection are the most useful dimensions to compare. Larger knobs can provide a more substantial grip and stronger visual presence, while smaller knobs work well on narrow doors and compact drawers. The base diameter also matters when replacing existing hardware because it determines how much of the cabinet surface and any previous mounting marks will be covered.
Mushroom-style knobs are available in metal, ceramic, and other decorative materials, with finishes ranging from nickel and chrome to black, brass, bronze, and mixed or patterned surfaces. When updating an entire room, coordinate the finish with cabinet pulls and nearby visible hardware while allowing for intentional mixed-finish designs where desired.
Most cabinet knobs install with a single screw, but screw length must match the drawer front or cabinet door thickness. For replacement work, confirm that the existing hole location is suitable and check whether a longer screw is needed for thick drawer fronts or applied panels.
