Choosing Kwikset SmartKey Hardware

SmartKey Security is Kwikset's re-keyable cylinder system used across several residential lock categories. SmartKey hardware can appear in deadbolts, keyed entry knobs and levers, handlesets, and selected electronic products, so the SmartKey name does not by itself describe how the lock operates.

Begin with the function required at the door. A single-cylinder deadbolt uses an exterior key and interior thumbturn, while a double-cylinder deadbolt is keyed on both sides. Keyed knobs and levers operate a latch, and handlesets combine decorative entry trim with their own lock configuration. Choose the correct function before comparing style or finish.

Mechanical fit still depends on backset, cross-bore and edge-bore preparation, door thickness, latch or deadbolt configuration, strike, trim dimensions, and handing when specified. Replacement hardware should be matched to the existing door preparation rather than selected only because both products use SmartKey.

SmartKey allows compatible locks to be re-keyed using the procedure and keys specified by Kwikset. Confirm that the exact product is SmartKey-compatible and follow the manufacturer's re-keying instructions. Commercial key systems or other manufacturers' cylinders are not automatically interchangeable with SmartKey hardware.

After function and fit are confirmed, compare trim style and finish across coordinating Kwikset deadbolts, handlesets, knobs, and levers for a consistent entry-door appearance.
