Choosing Keyless Entry Handleset Hardware

Keyless handleset shopping requires an extra check because not every product is a complete electronic lockset. Some products include the exterior grip and lower handleset trim intended to work beneath a separate compatible electronic deadbolt, while others are sold as complete electronic handlesets or coordinated smart-lock combinations.

Begin with the existing door preparation. Check the cross-bore and edge-bore locations, center-to-center spacing between the deadbolt and lower grip, door thickness, backset, lower mounting hole, and handing or interior trim requirements. Decorative handleset dimensions can vary substantially between series.

If the product is designed to pair with an electronic deadbolt, verify the exact compatible lock series and whether the deadbolt is included. Smart features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, touchscreen access, fingerprint access, or app control come from the electronic lock portion and should be confirmed at the exact model level.

Also review the interior trim. Some handlesets include a knob or lever, while others require or offer separate interior trim choices. Handing can apply to certain lever and handleset configurations, so verify the left- or right-hand requirement when specified.

Once fit and included components are clear, compare finish and trim style with hinges, cabinet hardware, lighting, and other visible entry hardware. Follow the lock and handleset manufacturer's installation instructions so the decorative lower grip and electronic locking components work together correctly.
