Choosing Interior Door Knobs

The correct interior door knob begins with function. Passage knobs operate a latch without locking and are common on hallways, closets, pantries, and other rooms that do not need privacy. Privacy knobs add an interior locking control for bedrooms and bathrooms, while dummy knobs are fixed trim used on doors that do not require an operating latch.

Keyed entry knobs can also be used indoors on offices, storage rooms, utility rooms, or other spaces where access needs to be controlled. Because keyed entry is a lock function rather than an exterior-only category, confirm the intended use and cylinder or keyway requirements before selecting the hardware.

Fit details matter when replacing an existing knobset. Check backset, latch faceplate or drive-in preparation, cross-bore and edge-bore dimensions, door thickness, strike preparation, rosette diameter, and any handing requirement. Matching the existing door preparation can simplify installation and avoid unnecessary drilling or patching.

Knob shape influences both appearance and grip. Round, ball, egg, tulip, mushroom, colonial, square, and other profiles are available with traditional, transitional, contemporary, and commercial-style trim. Consider clearance from the door edge, nearby trim, and the user's preferred grip when comparing profiles.

After function and fit are confirmed, coordinate finish and trim with hinges, strike plates, deadbolts, cabinet hardware, and other visible hardware in the room. Product-specific dimensions, grade, latch details, and included components should be checked before ordering.
