Choosing Interior Door Knobs for Your Home

Choose interior door knobs by how each room is used. Bedrooms and bathrooms commonly need privacy knobs, which add an interior locking control and an exterior emergency-release provision appropriate to the model. Hallways, pantries, and closets often use passage knobs that operate a latch without locking. A matching appearance does not mean two sets have the same function, so check the product description for every opening. Our door hardware function guide explains the differences before you order.

Dummy door knobs provide a fixed grip without operating a latch. They can suit selected closet doors, French doors, and the inactive side of a double-door opening when the door has an appropriate separate catch or retention arrangement. Check whether the listing includes a single knob or a pair and how the trim mounts. For an office or storage room that needs keyed access, compare keyed entry door knobs and confirm that the lock function suits the intended room.

For replacement door knobs, measure the existing door rather than assuming every interior opening is prepared alike. Compare backset, cross-bore and edge-bore dimensions, door thickness, latch faceplate or drive-in preparation, and strike dimensions with the manufacturer's specifications. Check the rosette diameter if the old trim leaves an outline or exposed area on the door. Older doors and mortise preparations may need different hardware from a standard tubular knobset. Review included components and any handing requirements before removing the existing hardware.

Interior door knob styles range from traditional round, egg, and decorative profiles to modern designs with simpler shapes and trim. Consider how the knob and rosette look together, as well as how the knob feels to grip. Compare finish options in the product listings and coordinate with nearby hinges and other hardware. Finish names and color tones can vary between brands. A brass-colored finish does not by itself mean the knob is solid brass; check the listed construction material separately.

For a whole-home update, count the doors by function before ordering so bedroom privacy sets are not confused with hallway passage sets or closet dummy trim. Review quantities and whether each item supplies hardware for one side or both sides of the door. If you prefer a lever grip, compare interior door levers. You can also return to all door knobs to explore additional options while keeping the fit and function requirements for each opening in mind.
