Choosing Full Plate Handlesets

Full plate handlesets use a long exterior escutcheon to visually connect the grip and locking hardware into one coordinated design. They are commonly selected for front doors and other prominent exterior entries where the hardware is intended to make a stronger architectural statement than a sectional handleset. Plate shape, grip profile, interior knob or lever, and finish all influence the final appearance.

Before choosing a handleset, confirm the door preparation and the type of locking system required. Full-plate designs may use tubular components, mortise lock configurations, single-cylinder functions, dummy trim for inactive double doors, or other manufacturer-specific assemblies. Check backset, door thickness, handing when applicable, bore or mortise preparation, and the dimensions shown for the individual product rather than assuming one full-plate set will replace another without modification.

For double-door entries, a functioning handleset is often paired with coordinating dummy trim on the inactive door. Matching the plate, grip, interior trim, and finish can provide a balanced appearance across both doors. If the hardware uses a double-cylinder configuration, consider the door’s egress requirements and applicable local codes before selecting a keyed interior cylinder.

Finish selection can coordinate the entry hardware with hinges, door knockers, kick plates, house numbers, and nearby lighting. Because full escutcheon plates cover a larger portion of the door than sectional trim, verify plate height, width, mounting locations, and existing marks or holes when replacing older hardware. Careful measurement is especially important when changing brands or moving between tubular and mortise configurations.
