Frameless medicine cabinets provide concealed bathroom storage behind a mirror without a visible perimeter frame. The mirror itself becomes the main decorative surface, which can work well in modern, transitional, and simple bathroom layouts. Styles can include polished edges, bevels, decorative grooves, rounded corners, arches, octagons, and other mirror treatments. Begin with the available wall area and the size of the vanity or sink below the cabinet.

Recessed and surface-mounted installations have different requirements. A recessed cabinet needs a wall cavity with adequate depth and a rough opening that matches the cabinet body. Studs, plumbing, wiring, venting, and other concealed conditions can affect whether a recessed installation is practical. A surface-mounted cabinet attaches to the wall face and avoids a large rough opening, but its projection and weight still need to be considered.

Overall width and height describe the visible cabinet or mirror envelope, while rough-opening dimensions describe the opening needed for recessed installation. Those measurements are not interchangeable. When replacing an existing medicine cabinet, measure the current wall opening rather than relying only on the old mirror dimensions. Also compare cabinet depth so the new model does not extend beyond the available wall cavity or interfere with interior wall construction.

Door swing matters near side walls, lighting, towel hardware, or adjacent mirrors. Check hinge position, opening direction, and the amount of clearance needed to reach the interior comfortably. Inside the cabinet, compare shelf count, adjustability, usable depth, and cabinet material. Decorative mirror shapes can change the visible proportions even when the cabinet body behind the mirror uses a more conventional rectangular form.

Once mounting and storage needs are established, choose the mirror edge and shape that suit the room. Beveled edges add a defined perimeter without a separate frame, while polished-edge mirrors create a simpler appearance. Review the individual product's mounting method, rough-opening requirements, included hardware, wall-support needs, and installation instructions before ordering or opening the wall.
