Choosing Exit Device Exterior Trim

Exterior trim allows authorized entry from the pull side of a door equipped with a compatible exit device while the exit device continues to provide egress operation from the inside. Depending on the system, exterior trim may use a lever, knob, thumbpiece, fixed pull, keyed cylinder, passage function, storeroom function, or dummy configuration. The correct trim is determined by the exit-device platform and desired outside operation.

Compatibility comes first. Identify the manufacturer, exit-device series, and whether the device is rim, mortise, surface vertical rod, concealed vertical rod, or another configuration. Exterior trims are commonly designed for specific device families and preparations; a trim that looks similar may not connect correctly to a different device or chassis.

Next choose the outside function. Passage trim may allow normal lever or knob operation, storeroom or keyed trim can require key-controlled access, dummy trim can provide a fixed exterior pull, and thumbpiece or pull arrangements operate differently depending on the device. Verify how the opening must behave when locked and unlocked before choosing the trim function.

Cylinder requirements vary across trims. Some products include or accept a rim cylinder, mortise cylinder, interchangeable core, or other keyed component, while others may be supplied less cylinder. Check cylinder format, keying requirements, door thickness, handing, trim dimensions, and preparation, and confirm what components are included with the exact model.

On fire-rated, egress, accessibility, or other regulated openings, exterior trim must remain compatible with the listed exit-device and door assembly and must not interfere with required egress from the inside. Verify the manufacturer's compatibility information, listings, preparation, and installation instructions for the complete opening before replacing or adding exterior trim.
