Choosing Dummy Handlesets for Inactive Entry Doors

Dummy handlesets are fixed or pull-only versions of entry-door hardware. They are most often used on the inactive leaf of a pair of exterior doors so both doors can have matching visible hardware even though only one leaf contains the operating latch and lock. They can also be used where a decorative handleset is desired without a latching function.

For paired doors, start with the active handleset. Matching the same manufacturer, collection, exterior grip, interior trim, and finish usually provides the most coordinated appearance. Some dummy handlesets are handed or use handed interior levers, so confirm left- or right-hand requirements when the product specifies handing rather than assuming the trim is reversible.

Mounting dimensions are important because dummy hardware still attaches through or to the door. Compare the overall exterior grip height, center-to-center mounting locations, lower grip attachment point, trim dimensions, door thickness range, and any required bore or surface preparation. When replacing existing hardware, record the current hole locations before selecting the new set.

A dummy handleset does not provide the same locking or latching function as an active entry handleset. On double-door openings, the inactive leaf may use separate flush bolts, surface bolts, or other door-retaining hardware depending on the opening. Review the complete door configuration so the decorative dummy trim is not mistaken for hardware that secures the inactive leaf.

Before ordering, confirm what is included with the individual product. Some listings may represent a complete exterior-and-interior dummy set, while others can be trim components intended to coordinate with a particular hardware family. Checking included components, handing, dimensions, mounting requirements, and finish together helps avoid mismatched active and inactive door hardware.
