Dummy Door Knobs

Dummy door knobs are fixed, non-turning knob trims used on doors that do not require an operating latch or lock. Common applications include closet doors, pantry doors, French doors, inactive leaves of double doors, cabinet-style doors, and other pull-only openings. Dummy knobs can be installed as single-sided hardware or as paired trim depending on the door configuration and individual product. They may be used with roller catches, ball catches, magnetic catches, or other separate hardware that holds the door closed. Dummy door knobs vary by knob profile, rosette shape, mounting arrangement, handing, trim dimensions, and finish family.

Dummy Door Knobs for Closets, French Doors, and Inactive Doors

Dummy door knobs are stationary door hardware that does not turn, retract a latch, or provide a locking function. They are used as fixed pulls or matching decorative trim on doors that do not require an active knob mechanism.

Closet doors, pantry doors, French doors, and inactive leaves of double-door openings are common applications. Dummy hardware also appears on cabinet-style doors and other openings where pulling or pushing the door is sufficient and an operating latch is not part of the knob itself.

Dummy function differs from passage and privacy hardware because there is no active latch operated by the knob. The privacy, passage, and dummy door hardware guide describes these function differences across both door knobs and door levers.

Many dummy knobs mount directly to the surface of the door. Single or half-dummy configurations provide fixed hardware on one side, while other products are supplied as pairs or full dummy sets for doors requiring matching trim on both sides. The exact mounting arrangement varies by manufacturer and hardware family.

Doors fitted with dummy knobs can use separate hardware to control how the door remains closed. Roller catches, ball catches, magnetic catches, and other independent door-retaining hardware can provide that function without changing the dummy knob into an active latch set.

Dummy function is also available with dummy door levers. Knob and lever versions serve the same basic fixed, non-operating function while differing in operating shape, trim profile, and decorative appearance.

Dummy knob profiles include round, ball, egg, tulip, mushroom, square, crystal, and decorative forms. Rosettes and mounting trim can also vary from simple round designs to square, rectangular, traditional, contemporary, and ornamental profiles.

Individual dummy hardware families vary by mounting method, handing, trim dimensions, door configuration, included mounting components, and whether the hardware is supplied for one side or both sides of the door. These fixed configurations provide matching knob-style hardware without adding an operating latch or keyed or privacy locking mechanism.
