Selecting Door Closers for Accessible Openings
Door closers used on accessibility-focused openings must be evaluated as part of the complete door assembly. Closer type alone does not determine whether an opening meets applicable requirements. Door width and weight, hinge condition, seals, latch hardware, mounting configuration, spring adjustment, opening force, closing speed, and latch action can all affect how the finished door operates.
Surface-mounted closers are available in different duty levels, adjustment ranges, arm configurations, and mounting styles. Regular-arm, top-jamb, and parallel-arm installations change the closer geometry and can affect installation clearances and performance. Select a closer that is appropriate for the door size and use, then follow the manufacturer's mounting and adjustment instructions for the exact model.
Delayed-action closers can provide additional time during part of the closing cycle on models designed with that feature, while backcheck and separate closing or latching adjustments serve different functions. These features should be evaluated against the needs and requirements of the opening rather than assumed to make a closer compliant by themselves.
Fire-rated openings can introduce requirements that differ from non-rated doors, particularly around closing and hold-open behavior. If the door is part of a rated assembly, confirm the closer, arm, mounting method, and any hold-open or delayed-action feature are appropriate for that assembly and the governing project requirements.
Because accessibility and building requirements apply to the installed opening, verify the current project criteria and manufacturer documentation before ordering or adjusting a closer. Product specifications can help narrow the options, but final suitability depends on the door, frame, other hardware, installation, and required operating forces and timing after the complete opening is assembled.
