Deadbolts for Exterior Doors and Entry Hardware

Deadbolts are door locks designed around a projecting bolt that extends into the door frame or strike. They are commonly used on front doors, side entries, garage entry doors, service doors, residential openings, and commercial doors where a dedicated deadbolt lock is part of the opening hardware.

Single cylinder deadbolts use a keyed cylinder on the exterior side of the door and a thumbturn or similar operating mechanism on the interior. Double cylinder deadbolts use keyed cylinders on both sides. One-sided deadbolts operate from only one side of the door, while electronic deadbolts incorporate keypad, electronic, or connected locking operation depending on the individual model.

Deadbolt construction varies by cylinder format, latch and bolt design, backset, door thickness compatibility, trim shape, keyway, grade, and operating method. Traditional round trim, square and rectangular profiles, low-profile designs, decorative trim, and commercial configurations appear across different deadbolt families.

A deadbolt may be installed as a separate lock above a door knob or lever, incorporated into a coordinated entry hardware configuration, or paired with other exterior door hardware. Some products combine a keyed entry knob or lever with a deadbolt as a coordinated lockset, while others consist of the deadbolt hardware itself.
