Choosing Commercial Padlocks and Interchangeable Core Locks

Padlocks are used where the lock needs to remain separate from the gate, locker, cabinet, chain, hasp, or enclosure being secured. Commercial models vary in body construction, shackle size, keying format, and cylinder design. Begin by measuring the opening the shackle must pass through and the clearance required around the hasp or chain, then compare those dimensions with the padlock specifications.

Shackle diameter and inside clearance affect fit. A thicker shackle may not pass through an existing hasp, while a shackle that is too short may not provide enough vertical or horizontal clearance. Longer shackles can solve some fit problems but also change how the lock sits on the opening. Review body width, shackle diameter, inside height, and inside width rather than choosing a padlock only by its overall size.

Commercial padlocks can be supplied with a conventional keyed cylinder, configured for an interchangeable core, or sold less core or cylinder. Interchangeable-core models are useful where the padlock needs to participate in an existing facility keying system, but the core format must match the lock body. Confirm whether the product includes the core, cylinder, and keys and whether keying options need to coordinate with existing door hardware.

Material and environmental exposure also matter. Brass and other metal bodies, steel shackles, and manufacturer-specific protective features provide different performance characteristics. For outdoor or harsh locations, verify the manufacturer’s suitability for the environment and maintain the lock as recommended. Security depends on the complete assembly, so the strength and condition of the hasp, chain, gate, cabinet, or enclosure should be considered along with the padlock itself.
